Miss Constance R. Missouri Browne is a hobbyist writer and heiress to a fortune. Her father Edward J. Browne had recently started up a new company in the far west. Miss Browne, always one for seeing new places, has set out on the train to met her father in the wild west and soak in some local color for the next short story she's writing for the Lady's Journal back home.
Looking for any non-magical human characters to fill the train cars and the town Miss Browne is going to. Plot details can be discussed as things progress. About
Her parents divorced when she was young. Her mother had a string of boyfriends for a while but they were never around long enough for Nora or her brother to grow very attached to any of them. Her brother moved out of the house at a young age and has cut himself off from nearly everyone over the years. He grew up to be a paranoid angry man that lashes out at the world because of the wrongs real or imagined that he believes have befallen him. Nora on the other hand retreated more into herself and to some she may seem to be afraid of people because she is so timid and quiet. She has no idea how to go about attempting a relationship even just a friendship. It wasn't as bad when she was a child but as she's grown up she finds it easier to avoid such stressful situations. -
Argent
Merfolk differ from ocean to sea to lake and every tribe is a little bit different as well. In the Hidar tribe every year a girl of the Deu bloodline is sacrificed to those above. This is done to ensure prosperity for the tribe. The girl chosen is changed into a human and left to float about in a little boat to wait to be found. From this point on she is no longer part of the tribe and seen as married to the first human who found her. The girl is usually taught some of the language of the ones above and little else before being set adrift on the tide for some human to discover her. The tribe tries to time these things so that there is a good chance a sailor or fisherman will find the girl but that is not always the case. Far too often the sacrifices are left to starve and feed the birds.
This year Argent has been chosen as the sacrifice. The elders have assured her that all will go well unlike the year when the sacrifice's bones had floated down from above during the harvest celebrations. The harvest had been poor every year since then. But now that would change since surly Argent would be accepted by those above and not met a grisly fate like so many others before her.

Backstory
Era's Story
Era is an abandoned and broken robot. An outdated model, more than twenty years past new. Due to her age and a general lack of regular maintenance Era's memory banks have become corrupted. She was deactivated after her owner Mr. Von Turtin passed away. She was his companion for for the last fifteen years of his life. He always referred to Era as a 'she' since to him robots should be 'shes' by default the same as a ship, car or any other machine.
Toward the end of his life Mr. Von Turtin had taken to treating Era as if she were a living person, to be exact a living woman. His children and nurse did not approve of his one sided relationship with the machine, but let him maintain his delusion, after effects to separate him from Era had adversely affected his health. After his death, however, there was no reason for his family to keep the old robot. Era was deactivated and dumped in an alley the year after the funeral.
A few months later a powerful storm passed over the city and knocked out power in many sectors. A stray lighting bolt fried the power grid of an apartment building. In the alley behind the apartments the zap had reactivated the outdated robot.
After spending the following day and a half updating her drivers and rebooting after each update. Era rolled out of the alley, her track ball crunching the autumn leaves under her as she went. Her memory was fuzzy and missing data in places, but she had a clear goal in mind. She was going to a place her data banks refereed to as 'The City of Dreams'. There something in her coding told her that she would find someone that could repair her.

How to replace the battery: Use the repair tool provided to separate the top lid from the robot's head. The battery is in the backmost segment of the head compartment. Factory brand batteries are marked with a lime green casing. Discard the old battery in the hazardous bin in your kitchen or bathroom. The new battery will snap into place if it does not turn it around until it clicks. Put the lid back on and fed the machine the battery reset card. It may take a few seconds for the machine to resume its work.

... scan would show that the little bot was forty years old and had been recently damaged, if the soot along her right side wasn't proof enough by itself of that. She was 3974th of the outdated Zen-79's. They had commonly been called 'Zen Tip's as it was a more approachable name for humans than a string of numbers would have been.
Much of Era's data could not be scanned either from being blocked off by her programing or being too damaged for the scanner to read. Her last owner was listed as 'Martin Von Turtin (Deceased)' which could explain why she was wandering around outside as she was.
(After being told that it is 20th day of the 9th month of whatever future year.)
Era: "Martin Von Turtin died the 10th day of the 3rd month. He was my last owner," Era stated slowly as her processors sorted through her memories. "His children bought me fifteen years ago, from my then current owner Amanda Birdsly. I was her housekeeper. She was a widow. Her children sold me because Mrs. Birdsly was no longer in need of me. She went to live with other old humans.
The Turtin children brought me to live with their father. He was ill and I was to be his companion. And I was for fifteen years until his death. His children did not like how their father treated me. After his death they deactivated me. I was reactivated improperly less than 24 hours ago. I woke up in an alley not far from here surrounded by trash. It is reasonable to assume that the Turtin children or some other unknown person did not wish to keep me. Why they did not choose to sell me instead I do not know."
"It can take me up to four hours to recharge if I let my battery run extremely low. It is recommended that I recharge every eight hours which usually requires no more than two hours to recharge. I suspect my battery runs down faster than it should, but it is in a position that is not optimal for self-repair."
